What does a doctor do in a winery?
Dr. Gerald Wunderer, country doctor and winemaker: Good question; easy to answer. I’ve been practicing in Straning for years. And I love the people, the picturesque area and good wine. So when the winery came up for sale, I immediately said yes. My father acted as a business angel, and my partners in the vineyard and cellar – they’re just as enthusiastic as I am. Wine stands for conviviality, for conversation, for good food with stimulating company. The body is happy, the senses relax, thoughts are stimulated. Animus and anima awaken – which is also beneficial from a medical point of view.
Matthias Lobner, head of sales, chef & sommelier: Of course, I had only advised Gerald, my life partner, to take over the winery. Since then, I’ve studied all facets of viticulture, because – as I originally come from the culinary sector – pleasure without wine is unthinkable for me! And I’ve developed an almost missionary zeal. A dish blossoms when you pair it with the right wine, just like a person does with the right companion. It goes without saying that we cultivate wine according to organic principles. Because harmony also means a sustainable co-operation with nature.
Bernd Klammer, cellar master and field operations manager: When they asked ‘Are you coming to Straning?’, I didn’t hesitate. The terroir and climate make this region incredibly exciting for winegrowers. Our cool area directly borders the Waldviertel, and what used to be considered a drawback is increasingly becoming an asset. For a long time, only early-ripening varieties such as Müller-Thurgau were harvested here. But now, Sauvignon Blanc and Grüner Veltliner are ripening to aromatic perfection. The grapes are thriving in the primary rock and loess soils and yield wines with body, freshness and balanced minerality.
